Toilet brushes are over-rated. They harbor an insane amount of bacteria! And they miss so much under the lip of the toilet.
So, let’s address the bacteria issue. You scrub the inside of the bowl with the brush and then put the dripping, dirty brush back in the little holder, where the water sits for who-know how long. How often are you honestly cleaning the brush and it’s holder? Probably never. And don’t think you’re doing yourself a favor by buying those disposable brush pads either. They’re FULL of toxic ingredients and are contributing to our incredible waste issue in this country, not to mention the safety issue of kids possibly getting to them!
Toilet brushes don’t clean very well either. It’s so important to clean under the lip of the toilet, where the water comes out. Tons of mold grows there and it’s often over-looked. Cleaning under the lip will keep your toilet cleaner between cleans. Even those brushes with the extra under-the-lip brush don’t work very well and miss quite a bit.
The best way to clean your toilet bowl? With your hand. Your toilet will stay clean if you clean it once a week. Even if it looks clean, give it a good once over with a wash cloth. It takes 30 seconds of your time and you’ll never be grossed out by a dirty toilet again. Need a glove to do it? Cool. Grab your cutest pair of reusable gloves and get cleaning!
My recommendations for a great toilet bowl cleaner are, of course, rated with a 1 by the Environmental Working Group and they are ones that I have tried and love.
